The Changing Nature Of Landscape - Water Colours of County Antrim Scenes

The Changing Nature Of Landscape

An exhibition by
Paul Richardson M.A.

This exhibition comprises of water colour studies taken from our local East Antrim landscape. Scenes depicted represent for me the familiar, the ordinary, the every day places that are often over looked and taken for granted. Such places when afforded our full attention and scrutiny can be appreciated for their true beauty.
Landscape is never static, it’s in constant flux as light and time ensures that the colour and form of any setting changes from minute to minute. The artist is tasked with trying to capture an estimation of a specific time and place.

It has been a challenge restricting my self to the technique of water colour as previously I have worked freely in acrylics whilst also making contemporary sculpture. The unpredictability of water colour makes for an exciting process, a process that is led by the medium. The medium is well suited to the depiction of the ever changing light condition which illuminates our iconic landscape.

The influence of St Ives: summer of 2009.

This summer I had the opportunity of touring the coast of Cornwall, spending several days in
St. Ives. Since my time at art college i have always loved the work of the St.Ives school of painters :ie work ranging from the quiet contemplative work of Ben Nicholson to the dynamic and expressive paintings of Peter Lanyon and Rodger Hilton whose work still looks fresh and relevent. Since returning i have been experimenting with simple little digitised images loosely
based upon the work of the artists mentioned above. These images have in turn given
rise to ideas for small acyrlic paintings.Posted are a selection of these digitised images, see what you think.
